Khus khus (poppy seed) milk for restless nights
A small cup of warm milk simmered with ground khus khus, a little almond and cardamom is a traditional North Indian bedtime drink for people who toss and turn. It's creamy, comforting and part of a calmer evening routine.

The Ayurvedic view
Ayurveda links light, broken sleep with aggravated vata — too much movement, thinking and dryness in the system. The remedy is grounding: warm, sweet, slightly heavy foods in the evening, a fixed bedtime and less stimulation. Khus khus (white poppy seeds, used widely in Indian cooking) has long been used in bedtime milk and cooling summer drinks; with milk, almonds and cardamom it makes a soothing nightcap.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon khus khus (white poppy seeds), soaked for 2 hours
- 3–4 almonds, soaked and peeled
- 1 cup milk, 1 crushed green cardamom
- A little jaggery or mishri to taste (optional)
How to prepare
- Grind the soaked khus khus and almonds with a spoon of milk into a fine paste.
- Simmer the paste in the milk with cardamom for 5 minutes, stirring. Sweeten lightly if you like.
How to use
- Drink warm about 30–45 minutes before bed, 3–4 nights a week.
- Pair it with a screen-free last hour and dim lights.
Helpful habits
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily, even on weekends.
- Finish dinner 2–3 hours before bed and keep it light.
- Avoid tea, coffee and colas after 3 pm.
- A warm foot massage with sesame oil at bedtime is deeply relaxing.

- Avoid if you're pregnant or breastfeeding without advice, allergic to nuts, or lactose intolerant (use a plant milk).
- People with diabetes should skip the sweetener.
