Punarnava: Benefits, Uses and Important Cautions

Punarnava is a common Ayurvedic herb eaten as greens and used for water retention. How it is used at home and why swelling needs a doctor first.

Illustrated still life with cumin seeds.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

Using punarnava sensibly at home

Punarnava (Boerhavia), meaning 'that which renews', is a common roadside herb whose leaves are cooked as greens. Ayurveda uses the root for water retention, but swelling needs a medical check first.

Punarnava leaves are cooked like spinach in parts of India, especially in the monsoon. The root is used in Ayurvedic formulas such as punarnavadi mandur for swelling and urinary flow.

The safest home use is as a vegetable in normal food amounts. Medicinal root preparations should come from a doctor, because the swelling they are meant for can come from serious heart or kidney problems.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup punarnava leaves, washed
  • 1 tsp ghee or oil
  • A pinch of cumin and salt

How to prepare

  1. Chop the leaves.
  2. Temper cumin in ghee, add the leaves and cook until soft, then salt lightly.

How to use

  • Eat as a side dish with roti or rice once or twice a week.

Helpful habits

  • Pick leaves only where you know no pesticides are sprayed.

Precautions

  • Do not use the root as a water pill on your own.
  • Swollen feet or face can signal heart, kidney or liver problems; see a doctor before any home remedy.
  • Avoid in pregnancy.
  • If you take regular medicines or have a long-term condition, check with your doctor first.
