Sonth Benefits and Uses in Tea

Sonth is dry ginger. Simmer a small piece for a short tea, or cook a little with jaggery into one chew. It is a kitchen spice, not a strong daily dose.

Pieces of dry ginger, a lump of jaggery and a cup of pale ginger tea on a kitchen counter, still life.

Sonth benefits and uses in a short simmer

Dry ginger is fresh ginger with the water dried out, so the same small piece tastes hotter. A cup of tea is a five-minute simmer, and a jaggery chew is a teaspoon-scale sweet, not a packet of candy. Both stay next to the spice box.

Do not drink several strong cups because the weather is cold, and do not treat sonth as a cough syrup or a joint medicine. People with a hot, acidic stomach often do better with less, or with none.

Ingredients

  • A small piece of dry ginger, or a pinch of sonth powder
  • A lentil-sized piece of jaggery for the chew
  • Water for one cup of tea

How to prepare

  1. Simmer the dry ginger in a cup of water for about five minutes, then strain.
  2. For a chew, warm a small piece of jaggery with a pinch of sonth until they just hold together, and let it cool.

How to use

  • Drink one small cup of the tea warm, after food rather than in a long fast.
  • Have only one jaggery chew, about the size of a pea once it sets.
  • Skip a second cup the same day. Dry ginger adds up.

Helpful habits

  • Powder dissolves faster than a woody piece, so use even less of it.
  • If the tea tastes sharp, dilute it with hot water instead of adding more ginger.

Precautions

  • Sonth is heating. It does not treat cough, cold, or joint stiffness.
  • Skip it when acidity is already flaring, and do not give dry-ginger chews to small children.
  • In pregnancy, keep ginger at ordinary food level or ask your doctor before using sonth as a drink.

Frequently asked questions

Is sonth the same as fresh ginger?

It is ginger dried, so it is hotter by weight. Use a small piece, not the amount you would grate fresh.

How strong should the tea be?

One pale cup after a five-minute simmer. It should not burn the throat.

Can I eat sonth-jaggery every day?

This guide is for an occasional small chew, not a daily medicine. One pea-sized piece is the upper idea.
