Triphala with warm water at bedtime

Triphala — a blend of amla, haritaki and bibhitaki — is one of the most widely used Ayurvedic formulas. A small amount at night is traditionally taken for occasional constipation and regularity.

Illustrated still life with amla.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon triphala churna (powder) from a trusted brand
  • 1 cup warm water

How to prepare

  1. Stir the triphala powder into the warm water.
  2. Let it sit for a minute so the powder settles slightly.

How to use

  • Drink about an hour after dinner, before bed.
  • Start with ¼ teaspoon to see how your body responds. Use for short periods unless a practitioner advises otherwise.

Precautions

  • Avoid during pregnancy, while nursing, and if you have diarrhoea.
  • Not for children unless recommended by a qualified practitioner.
  • Check with your doctor if you take diabetes medicine or blood thinners.
  • Constipation lasting more than 2 weeks, or with blood or pain, needs a medical check-up.
