A Small Glass of Weak Vetiver Water

One small piece of dried vetiver root, simmered and strained into a weak glass. An evening sip in hot weather. It is not a sleeping pill. Skip it in pregnancy.

A glass of water with thin dried roots standing in it, beside a tied bundle of roots on a plate.

Important: this remedy is only a supportive home measure. Keep taking any medicine your doctor has prescribed, monitor your readings, and consult your doctor before adding anything new.

A weak glass, not an essential oil

Vetiver is a fragrant root, sold dried as khus. A small piece simmered in water for a few minutes, then strained, makes one pale glass. Drink it in the evening if the day was hot. It does not treat insomnia, anxiety, or blood pressure. Do not use vetiver essential oil in the water or on the skin for this page. Oils are not the root.

Skip this glass in pregnancy. Do not offer it to children. If the root is mouldy or the water smells stale, throw it out. Sleep that stays broken for weeks, or days that feel very heavy, needs a doctor, not a stronger pot. Keep any prescribed medicine as it is.

Ingredients

  • A small piece of dried vetiver root
  • Water
  • No essential oil

How to prepare

  1. Rinse the root. Simmer it in water for about five minutes. Strain.
  2. The glass should be pale and mild. If it is dark and perfumed, dilute it with water or discard it and use a smaller piece next time.

How to use

  • Drink one small glass in the evening.
  • Do not take a second glass to force sleep.
  • In pregnancy, do not drink it.

Helpful habits

  • Buy the root, not a sugary bottled sherbet. Bottled sherbet is a sweet drink.
  • Keep the dry root in a closed jar so it does not mildew.

Precautions

  • Not in pregnancy, and not for children.
  • Not a sleeping pill, and not the essential oil.
  • Broken sleep for weeks, or a very heavy mood, needs a doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add vetiver oil drops to make it stronger?

No. Do not drink essential oil or put it in this glass. The page uses a small piece of the root only.

I am pregnant. Is a weak glass fine?

Skip it. This page is not for pregnancy.

Will two glasses make me sleep?

No. One weak glass is a sip, not a sedative. Ongoing poor sleep needs a doctor, not a darker brew.
