Coriander Seed Milk for Hot, Restless Summer Nights

Lightly crushed dhania seeds simmered in milk, strained and sipped warm or at room temperature on hot nights when sleep feels restless.

Illustrated still life with coriander seeds, mishri crystals.

Using dhania sensibly at home

Dhania (coriander) seeds and leaves are mild and cooling. Seed water is a traditional summer drink for heat and acidity, and fresh leaves go into chutneys.

Ayurveda describes summer restlessness as excess pitta, or heat. Coriander is one of the gentlest cooling spices, and a small cup of mild coriander milk is a soothing bedtime ritual.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 cup milk
  • A little mishri (optional)

How to prepare

  1. Crush the seeds lightly and simmer in milk for three minutes.
  2. Strain and sweeten lightly if you like.

How to use

  • Sip 30 to 60 minutes before bed on hot nights.
  • Keep the bedroom cool and dark.

Helpful habits

  • Lightly crush seeds before soaking so they release more flavour.

Precautions

  • Skip if you are lactose intolerant; use plant milk instead.
  • Safe in food amounts; rare allergy is possible.
  • A home remedy, not a treatment. See a doctor if symptoms last more than a few days or get worse.
