Shilajit with kaunch beej (Mucuna): traditional use and important cautions
Why kaunch beej (Mucuna) is paired with shilajit in vitality routines, what studies suggest, why its natural L-dopa needs caution and how to take it.

Kaunch beej (Mucuna pruriens, velvet bean or kapikachhu) is a classical vajikarana herb, often combined with shilajit.
Traditional use
Kapikachhu is described as vrishya (supporting virility) and balya (strength-giving), and is traditionally taken as a purified seed powder with milk.
What studies suggest
Small studies in infertile men found mucuna seed powder improved some sperm measures and hormone levels. Kaunch seeds naturally contain L-dopa, which the brain turns into dopamine; this may explain some effects on mood and motivation. Evidence for the shilajit-kaunch combination specifically is lacking.
How to take them together
- Use purified (shodhit) kaunch seed powder from a licensed brand — raw seeds and pod hairs can irritate.
- Kaunch powder: ½–1 teaspoon (about 2–3 g) once a day, or as per label
- Shilajit: rice-grain to pea-sized (300–500 mg)
- Stir the kaunch powder into warm milk, then dissolve the shilajit. Take in the morning.
Important cautions (L-dopa)
- Do not combine with Parkinson's medicines, antidepressants (especially MAOIs) or antipsychotics without a doctor.
- Avoid with a history of psychosis, mania, melanoma or severe heart rhythm problems.
- Diabetes: may affect sugar levels.
- Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Side effects can include nausea, headache, insomnia or palpitations.
How to take shilajit (general guide)
- Take a rice-grain to pea-sized piece of resin (about 300–500 mg) once a day, or follow your label dose.
- Dissolve it in a cup of warm (not boiling) water or milk and stir for a minute or two.
- Most people take it in the morning, after a light breakfast.
- Start low in the first week and stop if it does not suit you.
- Always use a clean, dry spoon so moisture does not get into the jar.
