Shilajit and male fertility: sperm studies, lifestyle and when to test
What a small study found on shilajit and sperm count, why it is not a fertility treatment, and the lifestyle steps and tests that matter most.

Published 7 October 2026 · 3 min read
Couples trying to conceive often come across shilajit. Here is what is known.
The research
A small study of men with low sperm count gave processed shilajit 100 mg twice a day for 90 days. Only about 28 men completed it, and the researchers reported improvements in sperm count and movement. It had no placebo group, so it is weak evidence. It suggests a possibility worth more research — it does not make shilajit a fertility medicine.
Traditional view
In Ayurveda, shilajit is part of vajikarana routines meant to nourish shukra dhatu (reproductive tissue), usually with milk, ghee and herbs such as kaunch beej or ashwagandha.
Steps that matter more
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol.
- Keep a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
- Avoid heat: long hot baths, laptops on the lap, tight underwear.
- Eat fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds; sleep well.
- Check your medicines with your doctor.
When to get tested
If you have been trying for 12 months (or 6 months if the woman is over 35), both partners should see a doctor. A semen analysis is simple and gives real answers. Do not delay testing by relying on supplements.
Please read: no cure or guarantee claims
Shilajit is a traditional Ayurvedic supplement. It is not a treatment for erectile dysfunction, infertility, low testosterone or any sexual disorder, and no product can promise instant or guaranteed results. Ongoing sexual-health concerns can be an early sign of diabetes, heart or hormone problems, so please see a doctor.
How to take shilajit (general guide)
- Take a rice-grain to pea-sized piece of resin (about 300–500 mg) once a day, or follow your label dose.
- Dissolve it in a cup of warm (not boiling) water or milk and stir for a minute or two.
- Most people take it in the morning, after a light breakfast.
- Start low in the first week and stop if it does not suit you.
- Always use a clean, dry spoon so moisture does not get into the jar.
